Woking council has abandoned its highly-controversial plans to relocate Woking College in Woking Park, the Woking News and Mail reports on its website. The News and Mail says the decision was taken at a meeting of the council’s  executive committee last Thursday.  John Kingsbury, leader of the authority, said other sites in the town were now being discussed as a new location for the college. The decision is not really a surprise, judging from the public reaction against it, and the resultant number of councillors who stepped forward in the last few weeks to say they opposed it. The only surprise is that anyone thought it was a runner in the first place. The outcome is a triumph for the residents group headed by Frank Davis, which set up its own website to campaign against the plans. The News and Mail quotes Mr Davis as saying: “The correct decision was reached, recognising the necessity to keep the park as a green open space free of buildings. The residents’ views were listened to and we did influence the decision-making process – an example of true democracy.”
