Many thousands of people lined the streets of Byfleet, West Byfleet and Pyrford to see the men’s Olympic bike race come through on Saturday, and then headed for the party in the park to see the rest of the race on the big screen afterwards.  Too bad about the Brits! Pity about the weather on Sunday for the women’s race, although it didn’t seem to deter the crowds, even though it must have brought the party in the park to a premature end. But a silver medal! At the park on Friday evening the security man on the gate reckoned there were 4,000 there to watch the opening ceremony on the big screen. There was a great family atmosphere among those on the grass as the sun went down. Very patriotic crowd, too; stood for the national anthem and sang it lustily, cheered the parachuting Queen and the armed forces, and the Jam’s Going Underground.  Fair play to Woking council for organising all this. They did a grand job!
